“Got Any Room?”

Have you ever been weary on the road without a reservation booked, running low on energy, and running out of options? It’s one of those situations where you either find a place to crash or your car will. If that’s ever described your specific scene, there’s no more vile a villain than the “No Vacancy” signs that litter the roadways and torment your heavy eyes.

Funny, isn’t it, how a state of fatigue finds a way of shrinking your search criteria? All of a sudden, certain must-have accommodations don’t matter anymore: You don’t mind if there’s no microwave or mini-fridge; you don’t care if the bed size is a king or a queen and you can certainly do without the deluxe view of the garden pond and gazebo.

All you want is the next available…and all you really require is room.

We’ll tell any hotel host with available space, “You give me the room and I’ll do the rest…literally.” In the early 1960s, two real estate executives from southern California understood the aforementioned sentiment. They were tired—tired of the unavailable and the unaffordable. They marveled at the idea of a basic, clean, consistent, and economical accommodation that would give you what you needed in order to get you where you’re going for only six bucks a night. Hence, Motel 6 came into existence, and later, in the early 90s, its commercials were popularized by Tom Bodette’s famous tag, “We’ll leave the light on for you.”

Bottom line: When the rubber meets the road, all you need is room to work with. It’s often the case with us…and it’s always the case with God. Thus, a 6 dollar stay has morphed into a 6th chapter journey through all of the gospels that’ll get us to see that God is moving in our midst and if your heart is to serve as housing for the holy, there’s one thing that God requires:

Room. The next available one.

Through four weeks, starting this week (Oct. 2nd) and ending on Oct. 23rd, the sermon series, “Gospel 6,” will challenge us with the task of housekeeping, of taking spiritual stock of the time, talents, and treasures entrusted to us, starting first with the truth of who Jesus is. Furthermore, this four-week journey will cause us to really consider this question:
