Today we’re going to hear a story of a time Jesus was honored by a friend. During Passover (a Jewish festival celebrating Moses freeing God’s people from Egypt), Jesus and his disciples traveled to a place called Bethany. When Jesus arrived in Bethany, he visited a friend named Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Jesus once helped Lazarus by raising him from the dead. Lazarus and his sisters wanted to have dinner in Jesus’ honor for saving him. Watch the story below by LifeKids to learn more.
Why do you think Mary wanted to honor Jesus on that day? During Jesus’ ministries, he performed many miracles, such as raising people from the dead (Lazarus). Because of this, Jesus was becoming very popular among the Jews. So much so that the Jews were listening to Jesus rather than the priests. The priests became angry about this, so they came up with a plan to kill Jesus. Jesus knew his time on earth was short, and Mary knew it too. Therefore, Mary wanted to honor Jesus by using the most precious and expensive thing she owned. By anointing Jesus with her perfume, Mary gave her best gift to Jesus.
What is the best gift you can give to Jesus? There are many ways you can honor Jesus. One way is to spend time with him. For instance, praying to him, reading the bible, and going to church honors Jesus. Another way to honor Jesus is to live and act as Jesus did, such as being kind to others, helping people in need, and being good.
