Do this in remembrance of me.

Luke 22: 19c

Hi Kids!

Our lesson today is about the Last Supper. The Last Supper is a special meal Jesus ate with the disciples before his death. To the disciples, this meal was for getting together to celebrate Passover. Passover is celebrated every year to remember the Israelites’ freedom from slavery. However, Jesus had other plans for the disciples during this meal for he had important things to tell them. Watch the story below to learn what Jesus said to his disciples during the Last Supper.

Jesus broke the bread and blessed the wine during the Last Supper to help his disciples remember him when he is gone. Jesus even says “Do this in remembrance of me.” as he did so. You may be familiar with these words and this tradition for it is celebrated in church typically on the first Sunday of every month. This tradition is known as the Eucharist or Communion. During Communion, we recite these words as Jesus did and share the bread and cup to remember his life and death.

Not all people celebrate Communion the same way; however, we can remember Jesus and his example by simply sharing a meal. Whether we share a meal with friends and family or come forward to receive the bread and cup in worship, we have the opportunity to remember. This week, enjoy a meal with friends and family. As you share the meal, think of Jesus by going around the table and inviting each person to choose a way she or he can be a blessing to others.

For today’s activity, let’s bake some bread! Below you’ll find a bread recipe for you to do with a grown-up. While the bread is baking or if you can’t make bread at the moment, color this page of Jesus eating with his disciples (download/print the pdf below).
