Hi Kids!

Today, we’ll explore the story of Jesus’ baptism. Do you know what baptism means? When someone is baptized, they promise to keep God’s commandments and love other people. Water is used in baptisms where it is sprinkled on a person’s forehead or a person is dipped into a body of water like a river, lake, or even a pool. When a person becomes baptized they are cleansed of sin. Watch the story below on how Jesus was baptized.

Why do you think John was hesitant to baptize Jesus? John heard of who Jesus was before Jesus came to the River Jordan. John felt that he wasn’t worthy enough to baptize someone as special as Jesus. Jesus insisted to be baptized by John, however, because Jesus wanted to show the people there that he was part of the community of believers. When the dove came down and God’s voice was heard praising Jesus, at that moment, John and the people knew that what they heard about Jesus was true; that Jesus would become the savior of the world.

Getting baptized is a special thing. Many people get baptized when they are very young and may not be able to remember it. Others get baptized later on in life. Whether you are old or young, getting baptized shows that not only are you a follower of Christ, but you’re also a part of a larger faith community.

For today’s activity, a coloring page is provided below of John baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan. Download/print the coloring page and color to your liking. Can you guess which is Jesus and which is John? Here’s a clue: people are baptized in water. Who looks to be wet?
