Hi Kids and Welcome Back,

Today we are going to learn about the time Jesus gathered all of his followers and told them what His kingdom was like (a.k.a heaven) and how people can get to it. Before we learn more, what do you think you need to do to get to heaven?

A few things you can do is to believe in God and Jesus and to also follow some very important set of rules. Can you guess which rules? That’s right, the Ten Commandments! It turns out, however, just believing in Jesus and not breaking any of the rules isn’t enough to get to heaven. There is one other piece to the “getting into heaven” puzzle. Watch the video below to learn more:

Now that you’ve watched the video, take some time to ask yourself the questions below:

  • What is one thing you would give up in order to go to heaven?
  • Would you give up anything to be with God and Jesus?
  • Once you go to heaven, do you think you would need anything you have on earth?

So what’s our lesson today?

To live like Jesus did and to not let greed over material things overcome generosity and kindness for others, and always be willing to help others in need even if that means giving up your favorite treasure. After all, your treasures will be in heaven and where your treasures are, your heart will be also.

For today’s activity we’re making a treasure chest!

You will need:

  • Empty shoe box or a small square box with a lid;
  • Scissors;
  • Crayons or markers (or paint if you’re feeling adventurous!)

Instructions:

  • Cut out a slit in the center of the top of the shoe box or the box lid. Make the slit long and wide enough to fit an index card through.
  • Outline and color the box to make it look like a treasure chest.
  • Download and print this pdf, PaperGems
  • Color and cut out the gems;
  • Think of kind and generous things you can do to get into heaven. Write these on the back of the gems;
  • Place your gems into the slit of your treasure chest;
  • Keep adding “ways to get to heaven” by adding more gems or a simple piece of paper over time.
